HeroesBy Jared Jenkins
In war, there are lives risked and lives taken
Men and women giving their best to defend what they love
They defend their country
Their honor
Their people
Some call them soldiers
Others call them heroes
Our veterans have risked their lives for us
They have lived through hell and fought with honor
Many have killed
And regret doing so
For every life, there is a soul
For every soul, there is a life
For those who have died, we show great appreciation and remembrance
For those who live, along with them live the horrific memories of battle
Some, memories of defeat
Some, memories of victory
Our veterans were more than soldiers
They were, and still are heroes
In war, there are no unwounded soldiers.

This is my Dad. He served his country in the Vetnam War as a US Marine. He didn't get a choice wether he wanted to serve or not, though he probably would have, he was drafted. He left behind a wife and a new baby to go serve overseas for close to a year and a half. Growing up we knew that my dad was a Marine and that he served in the vetnam war, but we didn't hear much about it. Like the quote says above, "no soilder is unwounded" my dad suffered like many, with not only the memories of war, men dying, shooting others to save your own life, watching friends and fellow soliders die in front of him, but also from phyiscal wounds. He recieved 2 Purple Hearts. Then to top it off when he got home he was scorned and spit upon, since the world at that time wasn't in favor of the war. Why would he want to remember that and talk about that. Over the last several years he has with a lot of help come to terms with the war and his part in it. He has learned to embrace that fact that he is a Marine, and that he did what he had to do at the time to serve our country. He will now let people pay tribute to him, along with all the others who served as an american hero. We as a family are so Proud of my Dad and what he went through and is still going through for us and our country. The memories never go away!
Every year the Elem. school puts on a program for the Veterans. It is always enjoyable and without a doubt I am brought to tears. Kids singing emotional songs get me every time. Also without a doubt every year know matter where I sit, ny kids are still buried from me. I thought I had a perfect spot, front and center, but to no avail. they had their speakers this year stand front and center, and I couldn't see over them very well. Oh well! They saw that I was there and that is the most important.
Last year and this year the school has had the Nephi cahpter of Veterans come and do the Flag ceromny, then the shoot off their rifles and I think that is called something, but I'm not sure what, so we'll just call it the gun shooting thing. My babies don't like it for some strange reason. It is pretty cool though!!
