In 2012 I called into the YW program. I was the 2nd counselor, which works with the beehive class. Though my stint was short, it was a lot of fun and I hope someday that I get to do it again. here are some of the activities we did during my 6 months.
I of the several crafts we did, was make quote books, the girls had a blast and were very creative, here are a couple of examples. We also made cards, hair diddys, cooking and a service scavenger hunt among the many things we did on Tuesday nights.
One of our outings we went to the hot pots, definately a highlight activity for the girls!
Time for snacks after having a few hours of fun, love these girls and that yummy 7 layer dip Gail made!
Girls Camp, one of the activities I was excited for. I only went to my first year of girls camp and always regreted it, at least I got to have a chance again. My body definitely isn't as young, but it was still a blast!
The theme for the year was based of the YW values and with an Olympic twist. Every ward made a team flag and torch. I got to make those, it was fun and our torch even had a faux flame that worked and glowed brightly at night. We won most creative or something like that.
The olympic part, with it being summer was all outdoor and water theme, our girls took full advantage of getting wet as you will see from the pictures.
Got to love the pictures the girls take of each other.
Our fearless leader Pam!
The stake leaders brought a snow cone machine, our girls had several. We had some fun colored lips and tongues.
Kristen trying easy cheese on celery for the first time. Very interesting the food combinations that we and up loving.
Olympic Day!
Pam had to get in on the action. When she slid her belt grabbed onto the plastic bringing it with her.
Good Times!
What a great bunch of girls!
Packing to go home, they all wanted to stay. 2.5 days is so not long enough. When I went it was a week. Why do things have to change.
So the ward owns a trailer, which is used mostly by the boy scout troops. They get kind of possesive about it. They didn't even want to give us the key, but they did give in. So Pam thought it would be fun to girly it up, to get back at them and also let them know it is not just theirs. Bishop was in full support and even told us next year we should add some curtains inside. The girls had fun decorating it up. recently when my boys went on a camp out. I noticed the door. The boys keep working on trying to get the stickers off, but guess what? Those foam stickers are really hard to get off unfinished wood, oops! :)
Group picture on our way out, you can see our flag and torch there in there as well. I wish I had gotten a better picture.
My advisor grew up around horses and her sister has a ranch just a 30 minute drive from Mona, So when the girls kept begging to have a horseback riding activity Kazeray made it happen. Good activity lots of smiles and dutch oven cobbler and ice cream to top it off!
Another big activity the girls did was go tubing down the Provo river. I didn't get to go on that one, so sadly I do not have any picture, but they had a blast.
Every year the Young Women have 3 big programs. There is standards night, which is usually stake level and in for both the YW and the YM. They have New Beginnings at the beginning of the year to introduce the new coming Beehives to the program and the Night of Excellence, which is to celebrate the girls and the amazing things the achieve over the year. I was in charge of Night of Excellence. The theme for the year was about the girls being a light unto the world and arising above it all. I chose the lighthouse theme.
I made these cool lighthouses out of poster board, and used them as a center piece. I also made a 12x12 scrape book type page for each girl with the theme on it. these we hung by rope around the table to give a sea feel. We made them little lanterns and gave them lighthouse key chains. We had a couple of talks by the girls, the president and bishop, the girls sang a song using candles, turned out way cool. Then to end it we did a night time balloon launch to the one of the theme songs for that year. I found cool LED balloons. It was fun and meaningful. Attached to all the balloons, were the girls testimonies of how they feel like they try to be a light in today's world.
Here is Taylar's scrapbook page. I thought they turned out cute!
Love this song, This was our balloon launch song!
The song the girls sang with the candles. Very powerful!
Like I said at the beginning of the post, my stay was short lived. I called in March and released in December of the same year. Our ward got a new bishopric and the bishop was the husband of our president. The church really tries hard not to have husband and wife both to have very big time consuming calling, so the whole presidency for YW was reorganized. I was very sad, then to top it off they put me back into scouts. I was not a happy camper. The only saving grace was that I was now in Boy Scouts instead of Cub Scouts. I really don't mind my new calling, even though it is scouts. I am the advancement specialist. So all I do is keep track of the boys advancements and keep the leaders up-to-date. I still would have rather stayed in YW's, but I can't complain to much.
The summer was filled with our normal life. Chores and play. We spent a lot of time on the 4-wheelers that summer, which I am glad of, because my parents decided to sell them. We could have bought them, but Todd and I couldn't afford them, so some lucky person got a smashing deal. We would ride them out to Mona reservoir and swim, or the kids would ride them in the field across the street. One of our neighbor and put his extra dirt over there when he built his house and made a bit of a motocross, the kids loved it. We tried our hand at gardening again, and again were not very successful. We will get it, I know we will. We made up family games and laughed a lot while playing and spent plenty of time drawing. That is always our families default when we get bored.
This is the game they made up that summer. Each paper they landed on had crazy random things that they had to do. A lot of them were physical, so they all got worn out playing it.
Our family will just make up games, I guess it doesn't always take much to entertain us.
We miss the 4-wheelers, but they were fun while they lasted.
Another activity, that we do every year is we go to the 4th of July party thing that is at the park in Nephi. Our stake puts it on, and the money earned goes to the YW/YM programs. It is always very successful. Todd always has an assignment being Elders Quorum president, so we go. I can say it is my favorite, but the kids have fun and it supports a good cause. It took TJ around this year, so she is the only one with pictures.
Tay did her first play this year. The Juab fine arts council does a family musical every year, that year they did Wizard of OZ. Tay was an Ozian. Since that time we have gotten a little more involved. My sister is invovled in the council itself and does most of the costuming. I help with that and my kids love being in the plays, haven't done too many yet but I am sure we will keep at it. This summer Tay was in the summer camp"Grease" and the rest of the kids were in the summer camp " Doo Wop Red Riding Hood". Todd performed just in November the adult murder mystery and now my family is all in the musical "Sleepy Hollow" I will put picture of those a little later. I also end up taking the pictures of the plays for the cast and their families. I don't know if they are all that quality, but I do it for free, one way I can donate to the program. :)
I love sunsets, they are amazing. We get a lot of orange and pink coloring in ours around here.
Also, this summer, well September ( but Kelten made his car in August ), was the Pinewood Derby.
I have to say I hate them, but my boys love them (husband included). I will be so glad when Knightin is out of Cub Scouts and we don't have to do them anymore.
Kelten's car is the gold, blue and red one.
Kelten this year, took Grand Champion. Good Job Kelten!!!!
I think that mostly sums up summer 2012.!
